The Alberta Diabetes Institute provides an environment where the discovery of molecular and clinical research is integrated into practical applications. Strong focus is set on the research areas risk and prevention, population health, secondary diseases, islet cell biology and physiology, immunology and cell therapy. Within the Alberta Diabetes Institute, scientist from diverse disciplines join in interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to take research discoveries towards general health care practice. Research translation is further ensured by their extended clinical research facilities providing the setting for regulatory-driven biomedical trials as well as nutrition, metabolic and physical activity studies.

The Helmholtz Diabetes Center in Munich understands Diabetes as a systemic disease, induced by genetic as well as environmental factors, where diet and exercise play a fundamental role. Multidisciplinarity within and among institutes promote the discovery of determinants and pathology underlying diabetes and ensure the integration of basic into clinical research. The participating institutes focus on connections of diabetes with cancer and obesity, respectively, epigenetic research, experimental genetics and epidemiology research. This diabetes research matrix fosters understanding of the genetic and environmental factors defining diabetes, regenerative therapies as well as mechanisms underlying type 1 diabetes. Furthermore, it directs the translation of research findings to the development of drugs and tools urgently required for individualized prediction and prevention in addition to personalized treatment of diabetes and secondary complications. Close collaborations with translational research centers and medical partners at universities, hospitals and companies support the translation of fundamental research into medical applications.

German Center for Diabetes Research

The German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) is a national association that connects major institutions and partner associations in the diabetes field, and provides access to world-class research facilities, biomedical technologies with clinical institutions. This interdisciplinary research conglomerate provides a network of basic and translational research, epidemiology and clinical applications where all aspects of diabetes as a complex and globally spread disease are addressed. Internal collaborations and communication as well as joint research projects are supported within the German Center for Diabetes Research with a special focus on network establishment and career development of early stage scientists.

The Heidelberg University Hospital is recognized as a cutting-edge institution at the highest international level for the diagnosis and treatment of metabolic diseases. Innovative tools to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diabetes and its secondary effects are developed by medical experts providing a greater impact on our understanding of diabetes and population health. In addition to intensive medical care and individual consultation patients profit from new therapeutical studies directly translating clinical research into treatment methods.

As one of Europe’s leading research universities, Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) embraces a wide diversity of fields, from the humanities and cultural studies through law, economics and social sciences to medicine and natural sciences.  The LMU is particularly noted for providing excellent conditions for innovative basic research, both within individual disciplines and through inter- and transdisciplinary collaborations across different fields of knowledge.

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) was among the first to be allocated as a University of Excellence and is regularly listed as one of the best European universities in international rankings. Excellent and interdisciplinary research in the areas of engineering, natural sciences, and economics are supported by collaborations with scientific institutions and companies, locally and internationally. The scientific environment is complemented by the TUM Graduate School guaranteeing scientific and professional training opportunities.
